We have hit the ground running here in room 12. Today was the 18th day of school and we are already well underway with our math centers and practicing 4 centers a week during our ELA block . As the year progresses students will be responsible for completing 12 centers a week, 4 a day with a finishing day on Friday. This independent work is graded and used toward report cards. All the center work is previously taught and should be seen as a review for the students to make sure they have learned the material.
Below is a slide show of photos from our Math and ELA centers from the past week.

We have also started working on our phonics skills. We began last week with the short a sound (a like in apple). We have covered -at and -ap. Next week we will continue short a with words that end in -ab,-as, and -ag.
Our Word Wall includes the following words:

MATH
We began our math journals right away this year. The day after I teach a lesson, the students are given a question or two about the previous days lesson. This is done independently and handed in. While in Math centers, I reteach the concept to those who did not get full credit on their journal.

Today, we completed our first Topic in math, Understanding Addition. This topic covered the following skills:
1-1 - Spatial Patterns for numbers to 10 (recognizing dot patterns)
1-2 - Making 6 and 7
1-3 - Making 8
1-4 - Making 9
1-5 - Introducing Addition Expressions and Number Sentences
1-6 - Stories about Joining
1-7 - Adding in Any Order
1-8 - Solving Addition Word Problems
I will be sending home a word problem packet on addition Monday. This packet does not need to be returned.
Each night you should also be practicing addition fact fluency. Dollar Store flash cards are great to practice with. Older siblings love doing this with them.
We will begin Topic 2, Understanding Subtraction tomorrow!

SCIENCE
In science we are discussing the sun as a source of light and heat. Together we read the informational text, Our Friend the Sun, and used sticky notes to show the main idea and chart the information we learned. We stuck these in our Informational Text Journals and wrote the information we learned on our sun project. Take a look:
