WOW!! What a wonderful group of first graders! I can't believe how quickly this week flew by. We really focused on the schools LOOP rules. This motto reminds students to respect Learning, Ourselves, Others, and Property. We practiced MANY routines and took a tour of the school. Students received their blue folders and agendas which need to come to school each day. Please take the "keep at home" papers out each night.
ELA
This week we read so many wonderful books to start off the year. Here are some of the ones we read:
We also wrote about who dropped us off the first day of school, made two class books, "I can follow LOOP" and "Our Class Book of Names", and wrote our first grade goals. We are in the process of making our next book, "All About Us".
We added all of our names to the word wall and played Name Bingo to help us recognize the names of our friends in writing. We also noticed that all of our names begin with a capital letter. We will continue to work on names next week as it is important for us to get to know each other.
One thing we REALLY enjoyed was sharing our 5 things bag. This is the first year I sent those home and I absolutely loved it! We learned so much about each member of our class and found many things we have in common!!

MATH
As you have probably seen, we have been working on representing numbers in different ways. Each day we will work on a new number (the number of days we have been in school). So far we have been doing these sheets together. Next week this will move into an independent task.
We also began our math centers today, and let me tell you...they did FABULOUS!!! This has been a classroom favorite since I started math centers 2 years ago. It helps students review skills new and old. We began with Kinder review work. I really want the students to see how centers work in first grade and concentrate more on how they look and sound rather than get too focused on challenging material. The more comfortable they feel, the more challenging the work can get! :)

What a week we had!! See you all on Monday. Remember we are dismissed at 1:15 on Tuesday for Professional Development.
